Hippocrates, a Greek physician was born in 460 BC on the island of Cos, Greece. He was the first physician that held the belief that thoughts, ideas, and feelings come from the brain and not the heart as others of him time believed. Hippocrates traveled throughout Greece practicing his medicine. He founded a medical school and began teaching his ideas. He developed an Oath of Medical Ethics for physicians to follow. This Oath is taken by physicians today as they begin their medical practice. He died in 377 BC. Today Hippocrates is known as the "Father of Medicine". He became known as the founder of medicine and was regarded as the greatest physician of his time. He based his medical practice on observations and on the study of the human body. He held the belief that illness had a physical and a rational explanation. He rejected the views of his time that considered illness to be caused by superstitions and by possession of evil spirits and disfavor of the gods. Hippocrates held the belief that the body must be treated as a whole and not just a series of parts. He accurately described disease symptoms. Hippocrates was the first physician to accurately describe the symptoms of pneumonia, as well as epilepsy in children. He believed in the natural healing process of rest, a good diet, fresh air and cleanliness. He noted that there were individual differences in the severity of disease symptoms and that some individuals were better able to cope with their disease and illness than others.

Her professional focus aims to advance wellness, prevention, post injury and/or surgery treatment with education to her clients as well as in all health care professions to include advanced massage therapy modalities for acute and chronic pain syndromes. For over 23 years, Robin has devoted her life to the massage profession. Schafer is known as the "Mother of Massage Therapy of Alabama". While working the art of massage therapy she is likely to explain the underlying principles of touch as a natural human need. Her work is the delivery of love. It is all about touch, not just technique. And delivering any massage therapy technique is merely an excuse to give your love through healing touch. Robin strongly believes her special gift and delivery system by associating the principles of the value and need for touch from pregnancy through death with dignity. They go hand-in-hand. She strongly believes that the predominance of touch is of vital and fundamental significance. Anyone who touches others for a living and everyone who touches someone else in an effort to help and heal will benefit greatly. She believes more than ever thorough understanding and appreciation of the evolution and principles of human touch that people heal themselves.

Schafer is a massage therapist pioneer who stays at the forefront of massage continuing education and development. Not satisfied with the old boundaries of what constituted effective massage therapy education, Schafer has forged ahead toward the unlimited opportunities that exist with innovations in educational technology, practice and theory. Robin Ann Schafer explores new territories in her practice and sharing therapeutic massage. Quality education is paramount for a successful career in massage therapy today. Her fundamental business philosphy is 'results follow energy'.

She has designed her own unique combination of treatment protocols and has taken the lead in her practice field, found greater satisfaction in her work and life, and succeeded in her massage career. Locally, a "medical" approach to massage has been more resilient than the general massage practice. People will give up their weekly stress reduction massage long before they'll give up one that they count on for pain relief or rehabilitative therapy. The second challenge is client expectations. As massage therapy's popularity as an effective treatment option has increased, so has her client assumptions of what massage therapy can do for them. Schafer offers general massage but finds that client's expectations and needs are rising under the current economy. Massage is an effective remedy for common ailments, stress, tension and a solution to pain. It is reasonable for her clients to expect these and Schafer is quite capable of relieving problems that many other mainstream approaches cannot. Massage therapy is now providing a level of respect never seen before in the history of our profession in Alabama due to its medical therapeutic potential.

The amazing healing properties of touch are why Schafer choose a career in massage therapy after graduating from Penn State University with an art degree. And, it is the art of healing potential of massage therapy that has taken her into a long, successful career in this profession. Schafer's massage therapy is an exciting new approach to the treatment of numerous pain and injury conditions previously treated only with conventional methods.
